Tunisia knew the artisanal trade since antiquity since manual work was the base of industries. The craft industry thrived in the past so much so that the souks constituted a component of urban fabric of the Arab city.

The hafside era was characterized by the organization of the souks according to the activity and specificities of each trade from where denomination of the souk like souk El Attarine (souk of the perfumers) or souk El Hajjamine (souk of the hairdressers). Because of the development and opening of the country in the occident, artisanal work lost its utility and becomes on the way of the decline.

Dice the new era, the President of the Republic granted a great interest to this sector with an aim of rooting the Tunisian citizen in his culture arabo-Moslem woman and of promoting the economic profitability of the Tunisian craft industry.
