Municipal Cultural Space "Saint-Croix"

The Municipal Cultural Space "Saint-Croix": a Tunisian-Italian project for the renaissance of culture in Tunis. The Municipal Cultural Space "Saint-Croix" is the result of a Tunisian-Italian partnership aimed at contributing to the revitalization of the cultural life of the city of Tunis. This project is part of the municipality's commitment to promoting culture and the arts in the capital, providing citizens with access to a variety of cultural and artistic services. A historical and cultural heritage The "Saint-Croix" cultural space, located in the medina of Tunis, near the Zitouna Mosque, is a place of creativity and artistic performances. This building, formerly a Catholic church built in 1837, has been transformed into a Mediterranean Center for Applied Arts. Its renovation was made possible through cooperation between Italy and Tunisia, as well as funding from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). Restoration and repurposing of heritage The Saint-Croix church lost its religious function after the construction of the Tunis Cathedral in 1897, and its sacred character was revoked. Transferred to the Tunisian government in 1964, it was repurposed as municipal offices before becoming the cultural center we know today. Thanks to restructuring and renovation work, this building has been preserved while being reinvented to meet contemporary needs, hosting cultural events, exhibitions, workshops, and artistic performances.

An international cooperation project The rehabilitation project of the Saint-Croix church is part of a broader effort to preserve the artistic and archaeological heritage of the ancient city. The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, in partnership with the municipality of Tunis and the Association for the Conservation of the Tunisian Medina (ASM), played a central role in implementing this project. The goal of this cooperation is to enhance the historical heritage while making it accessible to the public through artistic and cultural events. An initiative for the future This project represents not only a gesture of heritage preservation but also an example of international cooperation for human development. Italy, through its AICS agency, is committed to supporting initiatives that promote culture, education, and sustainable development. The "Saint-Croix" initiative is a model of what international cooperation can achieve when focused on human values such as reducing inequalities, promoting human rights, and access to culture.
