Within the framework of the execution of the requirements of the organic law of the communes promulgated by the law n° 75-33 of May 14th, 1975 and especially concerning the subdivision of the communal territory in municipal districts, several municipal districts were created. The decree of the Minister of Interior Department of October 3rd, 1975 divided the territory of the commune of Tunis into eight districts as follows: The Medina, Bab Bhar, Sidi El Béchir, Sedjoumi, Bab Souika, El Omrane, El Menzeh and Djebel Djelloud.
A second subdivision of the territory was carried out by decree of the Minister of Interior in November 5th, 1982. Indeed, this decree added three new districts which are: El Ouardia, Close-cropped Tabia and El Hrairia, consequently the communal territory was divided into 11 districts. In 1983 the district Ras Tabia was famous El-Omrane Higher.
In 1991, three new municipal districts were created by decree of the Minister of Interior and local development of June 12th, 1991. From now on the communal territory of Tunis is divided into 14 districts. These districts are as follows: El Kabaria, Sidi H'ssine and the ElKhadhra city. In July 2004 the municipal district of "Sidi Hassine" became the Municipality of "Sidi H'ssine".
The last two districts which were created 1994 are the district of Ezzouhour and the district of Ettahrir. They were created by the decree of the Minister of Interior and local development in August 8th, 1994. Starting from this date and until July 2004; creation date of the Municipality of Sidi H'ssine, the municipal territory was subdivided in sixteen districts. Currently the municipal territory of Tunis is divided into fifteen districts.
