Address: Square of the Leader

Located on a hill overlooking the Sijoumi salt-flat on one side and the Medina on the other, this monument is dedicated to Sheikh Aboul Kacem Az-Zaliji, a craftsman from Andalusia who brought to Tunisia advanced techniques of ceramic making (the cuerda seca). When he died in 902 H/1496 AD he was buried in this zaouia. Several sultans and princes of the Hafside dynasty are buried next to the holy man. The pyramid-shaped roof covered with tiles is characteristic of this type of architecture and has been replicated or adapted by designers of many other monuments. The building underwent major transformation and extension work in 1139 H/1726 AD on orders of Bey Hussein Ben Ali. After independence further restoration and transformations were undertaken to turn the building into a ceramics and lapidary museum (for engraved or sculptured stone) and a ceramics workshop.
