Souk Al Attarine
Various authors wrote about this souk, such as M. Belkhodja in "Ma'alim at-Tawhid" and S. M. Zbiss in "Monuments of the Medina of Tunis". The founder of the Hafside dynasty Abou Zakaria I ordered the construction of the souk (7th H/13th c. AD).

  • Souk Al Attarine (Souk of Parfumors)

Address : Souk Al Attarine
Various authors wrote about this souk, such as M. Belkhodja in "Ma'alim at-Tawhid" and S. M. Zbiss in "Monuments of the Medina of Tunis". The founder of the Hafside dynasty Abou Zakaria I ordered the construction of the souk (7th H/13th c. AD). As indicated by Mohamed Hchaichi (d. 1331 H/1912 AD) in his book Tunisian Customs and Traditions (page 377), the souk was famous for the trade of jasmine and rose essential oils, amber, q'meri, henna, etc. Nowadays in addition to these traditional products, modern perfumes and cosmetic products are also traded. Access to the souk: from the north through rue des tamis, Souk al Balghajiya and rue Sidi Ben Arous; from the west through Souk at-Truk; and from the south through Souk al-Fakkah. Many important historical monuments are found in and around souk al-Attarine, such as :

– Jemaâ Azzitouna

– Al-Khaldouniya, where Imam Ibn Abdessalem (a learned man of the Hafside era) used to live and which became in 1314 H/1896 AD the home of an association bearing the same name.

– Medersa al-Asfouriya, another monument of the Hafside era located in darb (neighbourhood) of Ibn Abdessalem (near al-Khaldouniya).

– The National Library.
