Taking into account the mosques, souks, places, mausoleums, palates, residences, and médersas (Koranic schools), the Medina of Tunis preserves a human, architectural, heritage, and urban single arabo-Moslem in his kind, safeguards the popular and national memory of Tunis, the metropolis, and incarnates the authenticity of a city which had existed for thirteen centuries.

Because it maintained the prominent civilizationnel Tunisian cachet, the Medina of Tunis was classified in 1979, by UNESCO, "cultural heritage of humanity".
