Located in a neighbourhood called Houanit Achour (Achour's stores) near al Hafsia, this medersa was founded by Ali Pasha in 1170 H/1756 AD as a dormitory for students of the malekite rite; it had a library with more than 353 manuscripts. The founder also set up a habous for the purpose of paying for the circumcision of 100 children per year; the event was to be held in the driba (vestibule) of the building. The lower floor of the building has a huge entrance with a driba, a prayer room, an open-sky courtyard surrounded by rooms, and a midha; annexes are upstairs. It is the only medersa to have a minaret (shaped square) for the call to prayers. Outside there is an adjoining kouttab (primary school) accessible by a flight of stairs on Achour Street. The medersa has recently been restored and is currently used by various cultural associations.
