According to Ibn Abi Dinar's Al Mou'nis this souk, which is the continuation of Souk al Bey after you pass Souk et-Trouk and which was famous since the beginning of the 11th H/17th c. AD, was initially a slave market (slavery was then abolished in 1263 H/1846 AD). The name Birka refers to the sitting position that camels had for unloading slaves and that they kept until it was time to leave. It then became a souk for jewellers, a function it continues to have to this day.
