Zaouia Al Boukria

Address : Ben Othmane Street
district : Bab Souika

This zaouia, better known under the name of sebaâ r'goud (the seven sleepers) belonged to al-Borkri (probably a deformed version of the original name al-Bekri) family. One of the members of the family is Bechir al-Bokri I who died in 1243 H/1827 AD. The zaouia was considered as one of the most sumptuous in Tunisia. The family became extinct in mid-20th century when the last grand son Bechir al-Bokri, a rich farmer and an early militant of the national liberation movement, died in 1360 H/1941 AD. The mausoleum contains the tombs of, among others, the ten greatest imams (preachers) of Azzitouna Mosque who served successively over a two-century period until 1231 H/1814 AD (cf. M. A. Ben Achour, Categories of Tunis Society... INAA, 1989). One of these imams is Sheikh Taj al-Arifine al-Bekri (imam in the 11th H/17th c. AD).
