The Plaza has been the seat of government since the Almohad period. Even today the plaza is surrounded by various ministries and government departments such as the Prime Ministry,Finance and Culture. Several historical monuments are found nearby such as the Al-Kasbah Mosque and the tourba of Ahmed Khouja Dey and Laz. The new City Hall is also in the vicinity. From the Plaza one can go north on Boulevard Bab Benat toward Bab Souika, south on Boulevard Bab Menara toward Bab Jazira, east crossing the Medina toward Bab B'har (Porte de France) and west towards the neighbourhoods of at-Taoufik, as-Sijoumi, az-Zouhour, etc.
