  • Library of the Town of Tunis (Dar Ben Achour)

    Built at the 17th century, the residence Dar Ben Achour, which shelters “Library of the town of Tunis” counts among the many monuments which make the pride of the Medina of Tunis.
    Located in the residential district of the Pasha, the residence bears the name of a family of Andalusian origin and which appears among the notable ones of Tunis of yesteryear.
    The residence was occupied at the end of 19th and beginning of the 20th century by sheik Mohamed Al Aziz Bouattour, top dog (the equivalent of Prime Minister currently) of Tunisia of 1882 to 1907.

    It then bequeathed it to his small son Mohamed Tahar Ben Achour, then in Mohamed Fadhel Ben Achour, two large scholars who marked cultural, scientific and religious Tunisia by their written work, research and

    Acquired at the end of the Seventies by the town hall of Tunis, the residence was restored before sheltering in 1983 the Library of the town of Tunis, then, in 1990, the activities of Tunisian association “Monuments and sites”.

    By sheltering the Library of the town of Tunis, Dar Ben Achour in more than one way becomes interesting since this Library has the role, inter alia, to collect, to file and preserve the historical documents, the manuscripts going back to several centuries, the prototypes, tables, etc relating to the town of Tunis and Tunisois.
    The library organizes, regularly, of the meetings literary and scientific, the conferences, the exposures of photographs, which gives the opportunity to the citizens and to in love with the old city of Tunis to visit, or to revisit, Dar Ben Achour.

    Decisive element in the cultural life of a nation, following the example of the other national libraries in the world, the National library of Tunis is incontestably a reference in all the fields of cultural and artistic knowledge, the knowledge and information.
    The national library was built in 1910 by the sovereign husseïnite Hammouda Pasha to be used as quartering with the troops of the Janissaries, it was transformed into prison then, in 1924, in seat of the national library and the old direction of Antiquities and arts become the deposit of the whole of the old manuscripts coming from other public libraries.
    The ageing of the building was behind a serious reflection to arrange another space so that the national library is a source of pride, not only for the students and the researchers, but also for all the Tunisians.

    Indeed, the Head of the State, His Excellence Mr Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, revealed, Thursday the 1st er December 2005, the commemorative plaque, giving the signal of the startup of the new head office of the National library which extends on 35 thousand square meters, with the boulevard April 9th, Tunis.
    The building comprises a room of reading, a conference room, laboratories, a gallery of exposure, a block of engineering services and administrative, a relay open to the visitors, a restaurant, a carpark and an green area covering 10,300 m2.
