Built by the sovereign husseïnite Hamouda Pasha to be used as quartering with the troops of the Janissaries, it was then transformed into prison then (since 1924) in seat of the National library and the old Management of Antiquities and Arts up to 1958. The National library, which currently occupies the whole of the building, became the deposit of all the old manuscripts coming from the other public libraries.
