    Built by Abdallah Ibn Al Habhab into 114/732, probably, on an ancient building and reallocated in place of Moslem prayer by the conqueror Hassan Ibn year-No' basket into 79/698, the Large mosque az-Zitouna was entirely rebuilt by the Emir Aghlabide Abou Ibrahim Ahmed (242/856 - 249/833), in 250/864, on order of the Caliph de Baghdad, by the care of the Fath architect whose name is reproduced on the cupola of the mihrab. In 380/990 Ziride Al Mansour made build the cupola of the bahou, above the entry of the room of prayer giving on the court. Khourassanide Abou Mohamed Abdul Haq registered his name on the door in line with the mosque giving on Souk Al Attarine (474/1081). Hafside Al Mustancir provided the mosque with imposing cisterns for the east into 648/1250. In 716/1316, the mosque was the object of important restorations: the sovereign Abou Yahya made there replace beams and made there “work” the doors (those which one sees until our days and which close the room of prayer on the side of the court) and dependences. After the Spanish occupation, the Imam of the Taj mosque - Al Arifine Al-Bikri restored the monument and embellishes the zone of the mihrab (cover in naqch hadida) and it is with him that returns the construction of the Eastern gallery giving on Souk Al Fakkah and this, in 1047/1637. In 1063/1652 Hammouda Pasha remakes the minaret for which one substituted into 1309/1896, new a 43 m high minaret, works of the amines Tahar Ben Saber and Sliman Ennigrou. Financed by the Administration of Habous, it cost at the time 110,000 F. One called for the first time at the prayer, from the top of new minaret, the 26 Ramadhan 1312/1894, in the presence of the sovereign Ali Bey III. After independence, presidents Bourguiba and Ben Ali made there carry out great work of restoration and repairing and in particular during the years 1960 and 1990. This prestigious place of worship was also a not less prestigious high place of the culture and knowledge. It formed during centuries of the generations of intellectuals of which many promoters of a rebirth arabo - Moslem. After independence, the courses which were exempted there were transferred to Faculty from theology, then since 1988 with the buildings of the new Az-Zitouna University.
