The zaouia of sidi Kacim

Address : Place of the leader
District : Medina

Zaouia is west coast of the Medina, between the Place of the sheep on a side and leant with the external wall almost completely demolished in 1957.
This monument was built on a hill dominating on the west coast the lagoon of Sijoumi and the Northern side the Kasbah of Tunis.
It is not by chance only during second half of the XV ème century, that Sidi Kaçim chose this site to build its Zaouia, because as of the medium of the XIII ème century, the Sultans Hafsides (1227-1574) already chose it to build there Mosque Al Hewaà and the madersa bearing the same name, disappeared at the beginning of this century.
The tradition reports to us that the godly man - Sidi Kaçim - manufactured to him even the earthenware squares (Zalig), which still decorate the walls interior and external of Zaouia: therefore it carries the Al Zaligi nickname, which to him was allotted (faience manufacturer) and it east can be the reason for which the tradition wants that it is originating in Andalusia, country of the large manufacturers of Zalig.
But the very beautiful inscription added after the death of Sidi Kaçim, decorating the Northern wall with the lower part of the cupola, provides us the complete name and the origin of the saint who is called: Abù Al Fadhl Kaçim Ahmed Have-sadfi Al-Fasi, which shows very clearly that it is originating in Fés, but it is extremely possible which it left young person its birthplace, to settle in Andalusia and to learn the trade from ceramist; the opposite is also possible.

It is to be announced that we do not have any idea over the period of its installation in Tunis, but the date of its death which goes back to 1496 was provided to us by the same caused inscription.
It is extremely probable which its arrival goes up at the beginning of second half of the XV ème century.
That of which we are certain, it is that Sidi Kaçim had at the end of the XV ème century an influence without equal on the town and rural population at the same time, and it is the essential reason for which the sovereigns Hafsides feared it, and tried to attract itself its good grace.
In the beginning this Zaouia was the residence of our saint, and according to the tradition, it is Sidi Kaçim which built it with its followers.
Being outside the Medina and beside the one of the Hafsides main doors, (Bab khalid which carried after the name of Bab Sidi Kaçim) this Zawiyya was transformed the night into place of refuge for the travellers and the tradesmen, surprised outside the ramparts by fallen the night.
Ibn Abi Dinar informs us, that after the catch of Grenade in 1492, several Andalusians coldly unloaded in Tunis settled temporarily in Zaouia, it will be the case also for Moriscos arrived to Tunisia at the beginning of the XVII ème century. These data, and restoration of the mausoleum during the same time, carried out by the Sheik of the Andalusians famous Abù Gaïth Al Qassas.
