This mosque, built in the 8th H/14th c. AD, is located in Souk des Armes (Weapons Souk) near Bab el Jedid and el-Mar Streets. According to legend a widow sold her jewellery to finance the construction of the mosque, hence its name of mosque of haliq (golden rings). In his book Monuments of Tunis (1971) S. M. Zbiss indicates that the cupola of the mihrab is topped by a dome containing eight crossed sections — a technique that was new at that time and that came probably from Algeria. The monument underwent various repairs during the 11th H/18th c. AD. The square minaret of Hafsid style is of the same period. Sheikh al-Islam Mohamed al-Aziz Jaïet was one of the most illustrious imams -preachers) to serve in that mosque.
