Director: Souâd MAHBOULI

The Museum of the Town of Tunis (Kheireddine Palace) a superb historic building is located in the middle of the medina of Tunis. It meets the international standards of safety and conservation of works.
The Kheireddine Palace accommodates, regularly, of the exposures of high level visual arts.
It concerns the Municipality of Tunis (Direction of the Communal Affairs - Sub direction of the Cultural activity).
Built between 1860 and 1870 by the Kheïreddine Minister, the Palace combined a traditional organization with European innovations: frontage with broad openings on street, interior decoration Italianized with mouldings gilded with the sheet.
Nowadays, there remained of this splendor only the modified part of the frontage and the decoration of a living room with its cast iron chimney.
Indeed, with the French protectorate and the departure of the Minister, the property was parcelled out with its sale in 1881: several private owners divided the appendices, the palace even, after having been used for some time as Court, were divided and sold to two different owners in 1905.
The part of the palace located along the street of the Court called Hafsia palace was demolished between 1910 and 1920 and one school was built on the released ground and the neighbouring grounds, all properties of the community Jew since 1908.
Other half of the palace giving on the place called old law courts was assigned to a Moslem school.
Become public domain in 1961, this part of the palate was abandoned some time, except a wing which was used as company flat for the Director of the elementary school. In 1972, after the consolidation work made by the Municipality of Tunis, this wing sheltered certain services of the District of Tunis.
This whole of buildings partially used (municipal part) or closed down (old school Jew) was on standby of a project which would give again life to him and constitute a center of attraction for the Medina.
