It is the Acropolis of punic Carthage, then of Carthage Roman. Under French protectorate, a large cathedral is built there as well as a seminar for the White Fathers.
The museum of Carthage settles thereafter in the buildings of this unused seminar.
Building renovated and adapted to its new functions, the museum gathers, preserves and exposes the collections of archaeological artefacts coming from the site.
Three great periods are thus recalled: phénico-punic, Romano-African, arabo-Moslem woman.
The nature of the objects varies, depend on specificities of each time: potteries, steles, sarcophagi, sculptures, mosaics, inscriptions, ceramics and small objects.
The museum has several showrooms for the periods punic, Roman, early Christian, arabo-Moslem woman. The museum also has:

  • Reserves of the collections: mosaics, architectures, sculptures, inscriptions, ceramics and menus of objects.
  • Three funds of libraries devoted to the ancient period.
  • A Conference room. Gantry of animation.
  • A laboratory of restoration and maintenance of the objects of collection a museum.
  • A deposit of the archaeological material of the international excavation campaign.
The museum is installed at the top of the hill of Byrsa. It profits in its environment immediate and close to the development of the punic and Roman vestiges released (punic district of habitat of the 3rd-2rd front centuries J. - C. and vestiges of the monuments of the Roman forum).

The whole of the vestiges of Carthge form an Archaeological Park which understands, with those of the hill of Byrsa, certain monuments or units worth visiting: the Magon district, ports punic, the tophet sanctuary of Tanit and Baal Hammon, two whole of punic vestiges located on Decumanus Maximus, terms of Antonin, Roman villas of Odéon, the amphitheater, the early Christian museum, basilicas of Damous El Karita and Saint-Cyprien, the building with columns, large cisterns of the Malaga and Dar Saniet in Amilcar.

The museum, as well as the whole of the monuments and vestiges of Carthage, are open every day, without interruption, all the year. The ticket of entry is total.
